Key features of road cases include:

  1. Multipurpose Design: Road cases are not built for any particular equipment or instrument. Instead, they are designed to accommodate a wide range of items, making them highly versatile.
  2. Customisable Interior: These cases often have a customisable foam interior with perforated foam layers that can be easily removed to fit different shapes and sizes of items. Users can create custom compartments to securely hold their equipment.
  3. Durable Construction: Like other road cases, utility cases are constructed from rugged and durable materials, such as high-density plastic, aluminium, or composite materials, to withstand the rigors of travel and protect the contents.
  4. Handles and Wheels: Larger road cases usually come with handles and wheels, allowing for easy transportation even when loaded with heavy items.
  5. Stackable Design: Many road cases have a stackable design, making them efficient for storage and transport in large quantities.
  6. Latch Closures and Locks: They often feature reliable latch closures to keep the case securely shut during transit. Some may include locks for additional security.
  7. Water and Dust Resistance: Depending on the specific model, road cases may offer some level of water and dust resistance to protect the contents from environmental hazards.

Anatomy of a road case

Road cases are typically constructed from various components that work together to provide durability, protection and functionality. The components of road cases can vary based on the specific design, purpose, and manufacturer, but here are the common components you’ll find in road cases:

  • Exterior Panels: The foundation of a road case is made from sturdy materials such as plywood, aluminium, or high-density composite panelling. These panels provide structural integrity and protection from impacts and environmental elements.
  • Edges and Corners: Reinforced edges and corners provide added protection to the case and its contents. They are often made from aluminium or steel for increased durability. Our Ovation Cases use ball corners that are made from solid 2mm thick, galvanised steel ball corners with 9 rivet holes, compared to eh industry standard of 6, to provide a more secure mechanical bond between ALL case elements.
  • Hardware: Road cases are equipped with various types of hardware for closures, security, and functionality. Our Adam Hall range includes latches, locks, hinges, handles, corners, case edge handles, and ball corners.
  • Latches and Locks: Latches secure cases shut during transportation and storage, while locks provide an extra layer of security. There are a variety of latches and locking mechanisms available, such as butterfly latches, recessed twist latches and padlockable latches.
  • Handles: Handles allow for easy carrying and manoeuvring of the case. Recessed handles are commonly used to create a flush exterior and prevent damage during transit.
  • Castors: Road cases designed for larger and heavier equipment often include built-in wheels to facilitate rolling transportation. These wheels can be recessed or include brakes depending on client’s specifications and needs.
  • Foam lining: Most cases are often lined with carpet, 5mm foam or other soft materials to protect the equipment from scratching or abrasion.
  • Racks and Shelves: Road cases used for audio equipment often include racks or shelves to securely hold equipment like amplifiers, mixers, and processors. These racks can be adjustable to accommodate different-sized equipment.
